J'ai lu ce livre dans le cadre du groupe d'achange sur le féminisme lancé par Emma Watson sur Goodreads. Je me suis dit que ce serait l'occasion de changer un peu d'horizon.Le premier livre est donc une autobiographie d'une féministe américaine mondialement reconnue : Gloria Steinem.Au début l'auteur va nous raconter son passé, son parcours. Comment elle a pu devenir la femme qu'elle est, cette personne tellement plus à l'aise sur les routes et capables de passer presque un an loin de chez elle, d'une réunion à l'autre. Elle a retiré de son enfance des leçons et des tics de vie. Elle a appris de ses voyages à l'étranger, et petit à petit, elle est devenue la femme qu'elle est au moment où elle écrit ce livre.Elle a appris la politique en tant que soutient, organisatrice de meeting, a defendu les droits des femmes. Le droit d'être reconnue, d'être l'égale de l'homme, puis le droit de disposer de son corps, soutenant même des associations LGBT - même si on ne peut pas dire qu'elle défende réellement le droit à être lesbienne ou trans. Disons plutôt qu'elle les aide à organiser des réunions portant sur d'autres sujets et qu'elle ne les rejette pas. Au fond, c'est déjà un grand pas.Parfois, l'auteur digresse et deux digressions m'ont particulièrement intéressée : les taxis et les hôtesses de l'air. J'aimerai beaucoup lire un livre témoignage sur ces métiers et ceux qui le composent. Les anecdotes qu'elle relate sont passionnantes et donnent envie d'en avoir plus.J'ai préféré ces deux passages à la politique. En effet, la façon dont elle est passé d'étudiante soutient à organisatrice de meeting est un peu aride. Elle défend des candidats, mais ce n'est pas vraiment notre façon de faire en France. Du coup, je suis restée plus distanciée vis à vis de ça.Lorsqu'elle quitte ses convictions pour nous expliquer le pourquoi, j'ai plus apprécié. Comme la campagne Obama/Clinton. Ses choix, leurs conséquences, mais ses convictions profondes, nous parlent et nous prouve que tout est histoire de nuances.Au final c'est un livre assez inégal qui est ici. Tranches de vie, ordonnées bien sûr, les thèmes sont variés même si on en revient toujours au droit des femmes. Ces associations qui n'arrivent même pas à se soutenir réellement entre elles.J'ai toutefois apprécié lire cette biographie qui fait réfléchir et nous offre un point de vue de féministe sur le féminisme sans pour autant faire du prosélytisme.Intéressant.
I taught women's studies for years so I am very familiar with Steinem's work and life. Even so, this book surprised me with its warmth and insight. It is not a biography but more of a road journal. It is not crafted by chronology but by memory and thought stream. I found it very engaging and moving. The opening dedication was heart rending for those of us who lived in those years.Steinem is the half generation between me and my mother. In the late 60's as my mother was ironing we were watching TV. The women's movement was considered radical fringe, even to my mother's peers who had built planes and careers during WWII only to be sent home afterwards. My mother watched Steinem on TV and said "she is so brave". I asked why and she said "she is so beautiful she could have had an easy life. She has chosen a hard road. It will make your life better". The absurd in the 1960s is now law of the land. It is with that in mind I read this book and appreciated the context of her travels and impact.This is a fast conversation of a book, not a polemic. I loved it and I hope it finds a wide audience.
I have been a fan of Gloria's and a feminist since the 70s. Had no idea her life was as adventurous as it was throughout. it is a large part because of her and her sister feminists and then my sister feminists. I have had a lived life as a whole woman even though it was often difficult and raised hackles and still does in Texas. From Wisconsin to Maryland to Illinois to Washington to Baytown, tx to Houston to Belgium to Shorewood, wi to Dallas, I have trudged as a liberal feminist,seeking compatriots, divorcing and marrying a younger man (43 yrs ago) who got my point! ........After spending 15 yrs with one who didn't.Thank you for your work, Gloria! My mother missed the ability to transform but retained the awful anger of the prison of home, not being permitted to use her nursing degree by my dad and her inability to tell my dad to go fly. My sister and I, both in our early 70's now worked in all types of nursing and have multiple degrees. Our spouses told us to go for it. See what a difference the movement made for our generation?I strongly recommend this book and many books about the feminists of the 60's on. Younger women often haven't a clue how we got from the 70's to now for women. We all have battle scars. Don't get me started on Texas!!!!!!!
This book at many points had me in awe, it had me laughing, and it had me in tears.I had heard of Gloria Steinem before reading this book, I knew that she was an amazing feminist and that I could thank her for my Ms. Magazine subscription that I'd been receiving for the last few years. However, I didn't know much more about her. I don't normally read (auto)biographies, the last time I learned so much about one person was probably when I was in high school and had to write a paper over them. But I was excited to read this for Our Shared Shelf, and I think my mom was quite excited I was reading it as well, because even though I have identified as a feminist in the last few years, I hadn't read anything more than articles or seen some movies, this was going to be my first real book that delved into the topic.Although I felt the first chapter talking about her fathers life on the road and her want for a home longer than necessary, I still loved hearing the story. Although I have never taken my childhood for granted, it made me appreciate my childhood and normal parents better, because my parents have never left me feeling like I wanted to live another life like how Gloria states she was constantly dreaming of a life where she had a home and wasn't traveling around the country constantly.The second chapter was hands down my favorite. It was everything I wanted from the book. It talked about her travels, it talked about her organization, it talked about her realizing that what she was a part of was so much bigger than anything she ever dreamed or could think. At the end of the chapter when she was talking about how it was the end of the conference that they had spent years putting together, and everyone is singing and chanting and holding hands, I was brought to tears for so many reasons. It was so moving, and inspiring, but also sad because the only reason I get to hear this story is because she is here to tell it. The Women's Movement wasn't taken seriously enough, so it's not video taped to televised, so I can't go anywhere and see what it really was, and that breaks my heart. But because of all of the people who were involved in that conference, women today have the rights and privileges that we do, and for that I am eternally grateful.There is so much to this book. When I finished it, I just had to sit there for a bit and sink it all in. It s easily the best book I have read this year, across all genres, and is sitting in my Top 10 Books of All Time. This book will be read over and over again and I honestly believe that everyone should read it
